The Maths curriculum consists of two sections – Numeracy (Number & Algebra) and Strand (Geometry, Statistics & All Measurement).

Numeracy spans 8 Stages. Each stage has a required Knowledge component (instant recall) that needs to be mastered & a Strategy component (solving problems in the + - x ÷ & fractions domains) that needs to be learned and applied to problem solving.

Children may be working on different or the same Stages for Knowledge & Strategy.

By the end of Year 4, National Standards require that students complete mastery of Stage 5 Numeracy.

Year 4 students usually span Stages 3 – 5 at the start of Year 4 and Stages 4 – 7 by the end.

Below are the PDF’s for Knowledge & Strategy Stages 3, 4, 5 & 6 which serve as a guide. In Nikau DC, we set our Maths Goals on learning and recalling Knowledge instantly. Come and see our Maths Goals Wall later this term.

You can support your child in Maths by helping them to practise these goals and re-checking their instant recall on a frequent basis.
I will be testing them in the first few weeks of Term 1 to determine their Knowledge level and Next Steps.

The Strategy sections are covered in group time.
